WOODRIDGE – Police have arrested a Monticello man on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident in connection with the death of former Woodridge village trustee Ronald Kates. 

Kates, 81, was crossing the street in front of the village hall before noon on Wednesday.

Village Police announced on Thursday that Carlos Gutierrez was arrested, arraigned and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Kates, who was also a member of the Woodridge Fire Department, was described as “a true staple” of the community.
