ELLENVILLE – Created in 1999 to honor the memory of patient Matthew Barnes, the Daisy Award recognizes the extraordinary clinical skill and everyday compassion of bedside nurses. Today, thousands of health care facilities worldwide present the award to honor the nurses who make an unforgettable difference when patients and families need it most.

Ellenville Regional Hospital is one of them, and it is the first time it has been offered. Ten-year veteran R.N. Mara Canlas is the Daisy coordinator.
“So many nurses take on the work selflessly, without expecting a thank you. But, you know, just like for anything anybody does, it’s great to hear that what you do is appreciated.”
RN Matthew Parrotta is a charge nurse at the hospital, and he says that the work they do is very demanding so recognition by the Daisy Award helps them and the community they serve.
“It does show that you have these (award-winning nurses) nurses that work here, and it creates a warm environment and a growing one, you know, for the nurse and the patient.”
