POUGHKEEPSIE – Motorists in Poughkeepsie will be hitting their brakes in September or catching a speeding ticket from city cops. Poughkeepsie’s new city-wide 25 mph speed limit goes into effect on September 1, 2026. The reduced speed limit starts just before the new school year begins.
The city will hold a period of public education and outreach to give residents and drivers time to adjust to the new speed limit.
The Common Council voted to adopt the reduced speed limit after a study by the Dutchess County Transportation Council examined crash data throughout the city.
The arterials are state roadways and are not subject to the reduced citywide speed limit, according to city officials. The City is working with the state to increase speed enforcement, including speed cameras in school zones and red light cameras at the city’s busiest intersections.
