PUTNAM COUNTY- Hundreds of garden aficionados enjoyed browsing through Trinity Lutheran Church in Southeast Saturday for the Brewster-Carmel Club’s annual flower show.
A wide variety of original creations conceived by the group’s membership were on display titled “Summer Reading” the objective of which was to promote interest and increase knowledge of horticulture, to develop skills in floral arranging while at the same time aiding and encouraging the beautification of home ground and public places.
The Brewster-Carmel Garden Club became consolidated in 1989 following the founding of the Brewster Club in 1929 and the Carmel Club in 1952.
The club has a number of ongoing projects including the caring for and decorating the Walter Brewster House, an historic landmark in Brewster; horticulture projects with the handicapped and elderly, planting and maintaining gardens at county and town public buildings and monuments; planting and maintaining a butterfly and hummingbird garden at the Milltown Cemetery in Southeast and providing annual scholarships to seniors at both Brewster and Carmel High Schools.
