KINGSTON – For the next six months, Ulster County government will create no new jobs.

The county legislature voted unanimously to put a lid on new hiring given the instability of the economy.

Legislature Republican Minority Leader Kevin Roberts sponsored the resolution that had bipartisan support.

“Over the last three years since County Executive Metzger took office the county has created 96 new positions, that’s about $10 million a year in salary, expenses, insurance benefits – these are longevity jobs. The county has to do like businesses, do more with less, and instead we are doing less with more,” he said.

The resolution is not a hiring freeze, nor does it direct Metzger to reduce staffing levels or cut salaries of the county workforce.

The legislature could extend or reduce the length of the moratorium.
