Tobias Otieno

GOSHEN – The former state auditor who was assigned to scrutinize the Town of Wallkill’s books, has been sentenced to four to 12 years in state prison for stealing over $405,000 from the town while he was conducting a review of the town’s bookkeeping.

The town had nothing to do with the thefts, officials said.

Tobias Otiento, also known as Tobias Ochieng, of Hyde Park, who came from his native Kenya to the US in 2017, was charged with felony grand larceny as a public corruption crime.

Otieno made no restitution because the bank clawed back some money and the town was also reimbursed by the bank, making Wallkill whole.

“This state employee broke the trust of the officials of the Town of Wallkill and the citizens of that community,” said Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler. “A sentence of four to 12 years in state prison is only fitting.”
