COLD SPRING – The Putnam County Children’s Committee 2026 Fund Drive is underway.

Founded in 1917 by Mrs. Fredric Osborn of Cold Spring, the nonprofit grew from her belief that children from struggling families needed an alternative to the county’s “poor farm.” She united concerned residents from across the county to launch work that continues today, providing financial assistance for children’s health, education and welfare needs.

Committee member Frankie Feehan said requests were made by school officials, members of the clergy or recreational directors. “We contribute to a number of programs and activities within the county that care for victims of abuse, poverty, family hardships and emergencies.  After the individual case is examined and approved by the committee, the request is funded,” she said.

The Children’s Committee also contributes money for school supplies, foster children’s care, holiday gifts and scholarships to needy high school seniors with every dollar donated given directly to assist Putnam children.

This year the committee is again offering scholarships to local children graduating from one of the county’s five high schools and furthering their education.

Last year, $8,000 in scholarships was distributed to Putnam high school graduates. “Financial need is always the top priority. Students interested should contact their high school guidance counselor for an application,” said Feehan.

Those wishing to make a contribution can send a tax-deductible check to the Putnam Children’s Committee, Box 187, Carmel, NY 10512.

Feehan asked the public to: “Please share in our work.”
