NEW ROCHELLE- Westchester County Police Officer Dave DiRienzo was patrolling Glen Island Park in New Rochelle when he spotted a vehicle outfitted with a “license plate flipper.” On one side was a legitimate New York State place while the other side featured a fraudulent Delaware license plate.

The Carmel resident stopped the offending vehicle and discovered that the driver, a resident of the Bronx, lacked a valid driver’s license.

The woman received several traffic summonses, including one for driving without a license, and left the park without the fraudulent plate or the car, which was impounded and towed away.

DiRienzo explained that plate flippers were commonly used for aesthetic purposes at auto shows, where they allow drivers to switch to display custom or decorative plates.

The veteran officer added: “Too often they are used by persons seeking to evade law enforcement or avoid electronic toll systems or automated speed cameras.”
