TOWN OF ULSTER – A 31-year-old Hopewell Junction man has been arrested and charged with scamming an elderly victim out of $180,000 after posing as a PayPal representative attempting to rectify a fraudulent transaction.
Balwant Singh was arrested on July 20 following a month-long investigation by the Town of Ulster Detective Division and Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division.
During phone contact with the victim, Singh allegedly coerced the victim into using money to buy gold, which he later retrieved from the victim at a shopping mall in the Town of Ulster, still posing as the PayPal rep.
Singh was later charged with felony grand larceny and remanded to the Ulster County Jail.
Police said if anyone has had a similar incident or information about this case, they should contact the Detective Division of the Ulster Town Police Department.
