POUGHKEEPSIE – As a precautionary measure, motorists are reminded that posted speed limits within designated work zones are mandatory rather than advisory to ensure compliance. New York State has deployed automated speed enforcement cameras in these areas. Drivers exceeding the speed limit will be monitored and issued a citation accordingly.

New York State DOT Region 8 Public Information Officer Heather Pillsworth said some motorists are paying attention, but not all.

“The cameras are working, but in the end, speeding in work zones is reckless and it’s dangerous. And we’re going to do, and the state is going to do everything they can to prevent any speeding,” she said.
Speeding on weekends and work zones or off hours, even when workers are not present, is still speeding.
“Whether there are cones, barriers, concrete barriers or lane reductions—a work zone is a work zone,” Pillsworth said. “Safety is our top priority, and we are looking out for not only our workers but everyone else.”
