GREENVILLE – Thomas Ryan, the man accused of killing his 70-year-old father Robert Ryan by means of blunt force trauma in the elder Ryan’s home in Greenville in Orange County last Thursday was captured shortly after midnight on Sunday morning in the Town of Gilboa in Schoharie County.
Police said he received medical treatment at the scene for injuries he sustained before being captured, was transported to Albany Medical Center and later transferred to the burn unit of Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler told Mid-Hudson News Sunday night.
“I am told that he has burns over at least 18 percent of his body, which is significant, his arms – each of them is considered nine percent, and there are severe burns there,” Hoovler said. “I fully expect that when he is healthy enough, he will be charged with murder-two, arson-three, and related offenses and will be prosecuted and will face 25 years to life in prison.”
It is believed that the elder Ryan’s home was torched to cover up the murder.
On Saturday evening, troopers received a tip that the Toyota Prius had been located unoccupied in a parking lot at 199 Route 990V in Gilboa.
He was taken into custody at about 12:10 Sunday when police received a tip from another resident of the community.
At the time of the homicide, police said he did not live with his father and had no other known current ties to the Greenville area. Investigators also learned Ryan had lived a transient lifestyle and had previously stayed at several shelters throughout New York City, Long Island and northern New York.
Hoovler said the younger Ryan has a history of mental health problems.
State Police from several troops conducted the investigation along with local law enforcement agencies in Orange County.
