MAHOPAC- Carmel Police issued an important message Friday: “Lock your cars!”

The warning followed early-morning thefts in Mahopac when unknown individuals entered seven vehicles between 3:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. and stole several personal items.

The larceny spree occurred in the Lake Casse, Lake Drive and Ridge Road areas of town.

Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann said all seven vehicles were unlocked at the time.

The chief urged residents to lock their vehicles even when leaving them unattended for an abbreviated period and to remove valuables such as backpacks, purses, electronics, key fobs, firearms, and spare keys.

Hoffmann went on: “Fortunately these types of crimes don’t happen often in Putnam County, but no community is immune. The best prevention? Lock your cars. Take your valuables inside or keep them out of sight. If you see something, say something and always call the police when you see any suspicious activity.”
