TOWN OF WALLKILL – Walmart has plans to construct a 1.5 million square-foot fulfillment center in the northeastern area of the Town of Wallkill right on the Sullivan County border.

The company has owned the land in the rural area of the town. It is prominently vacant with some areas of gravel quarry operations.

The automated facility is estimated to cost $1.6 billion and employ 1,500 people.

Town Supervisor Frank DenDanto supports the project.

“Certainly, we are interested in that $60,000 to $70,000 price point for employment, and certainly the employment number at 1,000, that would be a very big win for the town. I can’t speak more positively to the amount of ratable influx that would come into the town. It could easily, on its own, fix the town’s financial situation,” he told Mid-Hudson News.

In addition to the fulfillment center, plans call for construction of a 41,000 square-foot truck maintenance garage.

Walmart had its sights set on developing that property for some 20 years.
