The Boston Red Sox organization had to adjust its minor league rankings after trading away two key pitching prospects in the Adley Rutschman trade from the Baltimore Orioles. Anthony Eyason and Kyson Witherspoon were traded from Boston’s organization to Baltimore’s organization. This was a steep price for the Red Sox to pay in making a win-now move.

This move could haunt Boston for the long haul if it doesn’t work out for them. The top pitching prospect in the Red Sox’s farm system now is right-handed pitcher Juan Valera. He is the fifth-ranked prospect in Boston’s system. It will be interesting to see how he develops as time evolves.

Valera is 20 years old and he is 6’3″ and weighs 205 lbs. He is a right-handed pitcher. Valera was signed as an international free agent on April 12, 2023. He is projected to reach the MLB level in 2028. Valera has only pitched in three games this season for the Greenville Drive in High-A. He has a 0-0 record with a 1.93 ERA. In 9.1 innings pitched, he has given up four hits and two runs. Valera has walked four batters and has struck out 17 batters. His WHIP is 0.86.

It will be interesting to see when he will get promoted to the Double-A level and join the Portland Sea Dogs. That probably will not be until the 2027 MILB season. Some of the MLB.com scouting report for him said,

“Valera throws harder than most players his age, operating at 96-98 mph and touching 100 with natural cutting action, and he improved his ability to create carry at the top of the zone in 2025. His tight slider also features impressive power, sitting at 87-89 mph and reaching 93 with two-plane depth at its best. His low-90s changeup is too firm and resembles a two-seam fastball more than a true cambio, but it does get swings and misses.
Using a simple side-step delivery with a three-quarters arm slot, Valera repeats his delivery and will alter his tempo to throw hitters off balance. He continues to improve his control and command as he gains experience, cutting his walk rate to 6 percent last year. He also stands out with his mound presence and work ethic, adding to his chances of pitching in the front half of a rotation. He came down with a sore elbow last May and sat out three months mostly as a precaution, then made just three starts this April before requiring Tommy John surgery.”

It will be interesting to see how he will bounce back from Tommy John Surgery. With Valera now being the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox system, it feels like a major risk trading away Eyason and Witherspoon in the first place. Boston better be right about Rutschman for the long haul and they also need to be right about the upside of Valera as well.
