NEW YORK – The US Environmental Protection Agency is proposing an updated groundwater cleanup plan for the Hopewell Precision Superfund site in Hopewell Junction that relies on nature to reduce contamination over time.
EPA has connected affected homes with contaminated drinking water wells to a public water supply, and studies have found that bioremediation, as originally considered, was no longer necessary.
The federal agency said based on years of groundwater data showing that contamination levels have been steadily declining, it is proposing reliance on naturally occurring processes to reduce contamination over time. The plan also includes long-term groundwater monitoring and controls to prevent exposure to contaminated groundwater.
The site was contaminated with volatile organic compounds by former manufacturing operations.
