MAHOPAC – Members of the Mahopac Fire Department are much more than volunteers who drop what they are doing to answer the call in times of crisis.

Over the weekend, the men and women of Putnam’s second busiest fire department welcomed hundreds of special needs children and their families to the agency’s annual fund-raising fair for, as Chief Kyle Trillas said, “memories that will last a lifetime.”

The chief was impressed by the thoughtfulness of department’s Fair Committee that made the occasion more meaningful with the addition of a sensory tent — a quiet, welcoming space where students took a break, regulated, and returned to the fun.

“Watching inclusion come to life in such a meaningful way was truly heartwarming and reminded us that small accommodations can make a world of difference,” Trillas said.

A spokesperson for the Mahopac Special Education Parent-Teacher Organization praised the fire department for “opening your doors and your hearts to our students and their families. Your continued support helps create a community where every child feels welcomed, included, and celebrated just as they are.”
