CARMEL- Carmel Police on Friday did not release additional information about a stabbing that occurred 24 hours earlier inside the Carmel Post Office.
Around 3 p.m. nine-one-one calls reporting a “man stabbing people” sent members of the Carmel Police and Putnam Sheriff’s Department to the scene.
A deputy captured the suspect as he tried to flee. The weapon used in the attack was recovered after a brief struggle in which a Taser was deployed.
The suspect who was not identified was taken into custody facing a variety of charges.
The victim, a postal employee, was treated at Putnam Hospital Center with injuries described as not life-threatening.
At the post office Friday afternoon, customers remained in shock over the incident.
“I hope the poor woman is OK,” said one postal patron, adding: “I still can’t believe this occurred in our small town. You hear about these incidents in cities,” said the woman.
A man who identified himself as Anthony praised the deputy for capturing the assailant.
“This shows that training pays off. By deploying a Taser, the deputy brought the situation to a quick end without anyone else being hurt,” he said.
Madeline, a petite woman, thanked police for their response, saying their actions prevented further injuries: “The officers deserve credit for putting their lives on the line and ending the chase before others were hurt.”
