COLD SPRING – The Hudson Valley’s newest on-demand-response micro-transit system, Putnam On-Demand, has provided thousands of rides to those in need of transportation for work, shopping, and medical appointments at extremely reasonable cost over its two years in operation, is expanding to Philipstown and Putnam Valley.
At a news conference in Cold Spring Thursday, County Executive Kevin Byrne described the expansion as a game changer.
County Legislator Bill Gouldman who represents constituents in the greater Putnam Valley area said the expansion of service will be a great benefit for those unable to go to a supermarket, a doctor’s appointment, a pharmacy, the senior center, the library, to work, or even to the mall because of the lack of public transportation.
In May 2024, Putnam On-Demand became operational on the eastern side of the county.
At that time Byrne described the network as an “affordable solution that not only connects people to jobs, critical healthcare appointments, and schools, but also reduces costs on county taxpayers thanks to outside funding.”
Byrne said Putnam On-Demand is making a “real difference in the lives of seniors and disabled New Yorkers and serves as a model that can inspire communities across the Hudson Valley.”
The initiative has been recognized by Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress with the Progress in Action Award highlighting the initiative’s regional significance in how innovation can address transportation challenges for seniors and others in a cost-effective way while improving residents’ overall quality of life.
