GOSHEN – Governor Hochul is being urged to sign a pair of bills that would protect the pension benefits of Orange County sheriff’s and county jail correctional officers.
Senate Sponsor James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) said at present, if an employee retires with enough time on the job, and dies, their family would receive full benefits.
But, if the worker opts to stay on the job and dies, there would be just a one-time death benefit.
And, Skoufis says that is wrong.
“Simply by virtue of wanting to continue their work – their public service – they gamble with their family’s financial wellbeing if something were ever to happen to them,” he said.
Assembly sponsor Paula Kay (D, Rock Hill) said the measures “give these dedicated men and women and their families the peace of mind they deserve as they put their bodies on the line each day to keep our communities safe.”
The legislation is backed by the unions representing both classifications of county employees.
