MONTICELLO – Drivers along Route 17B should keep a sharp eye on the speedometer as the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is stepping up speed enforcement across the corridor for the 12th consecutive year. This increase in enforcement is a result of several recent crashes, some of which have resulted in fatalities. Deputies are utilizing newly commissioned stealth patrol vehicles equipped with advanced laser radar to catch speeding motorists.

Sheriff Mike Schiff explains.

“We’re going to use these tools to try to find these aggressive drivers, slow them down and try to lower the carnage on that highway.”

From this reporter’s perspective, it seems like aggressive driving is on the rise, or one could say, out of control. Schiff has advice for all drivers.

“If you find a public place to pull in, call 911 or call for a police officer and get someone there. And if you can obtain a plate, get a plate,” he said. “But do not interact with these people. You don’t know if they’re rational. You don’t know why they’re acting out. Just don’t let it be personal. Don’t have that contact, eye contact, or any kind of contact.”
