NELSONVILLE – The Village of Nelsonville may be Putnam’s smallest municipality with some 750 residents, yet village officials are concerned with governments sharing personal information of residents with immigration agents without a warrant.

Members of the village board approved a resolution that supports “our immigrant neighbors whether their family arrived in the United States yesterday or 250 years ago.”

The local law requires that employees notify either the village clerk or village attorney if they receive a judicial warrant.

Nelsonville’s prohibition mirrors immigration related restrictions placed on cities, towns, villages, and school districts by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Nelsonville Mayor Chris Winward admitted, “We don’t think that we would be a target, but you never know, and better to be prepared than not.”
