Landlords are abusing good cause legislation, says Middletown mayor

MIDDLETOWN – Good cause eviction legislation in the City of Middletown is being abused by some landlords, Mayor Joseph DeStefano says.

City Hall has received complaints recently, and the mayor wants renters to know their rights.

“Good Cause Eviction is in place in Middletown. They cannot raise your rent 10, 15, 20 percent, unless there were some capital improvements that were done. They have to justify it,” “But, if you are receiving a rent increase of over five percent, we have a tenants’ rights hotline.”

DeStefano said one renter was hit with a 25 percent rent hike and that is unacceptable.
