LAKE KATRINE – A suicidal man was saved from jumping off the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge on Friday, July 24, when police and civilians pulled the man to safety.
Town of Ulster and State Police were called to the scene minutes before 10 p.m. where they found the man had climbed over the railing, resisted officers’ attempts to pull him to safety and then dropped to a position where he was hanging off the bridge from a concrete barrier.
An Ulster County deputy sheriff provided a rope to secure the man to the railing.
Several passing civilians stopped to assist in the rescue efforts providing rope, a bucket truck, and other rescue aid.
A second deputy communicated with the man in Spanish, ultimately convincing him to climb back over the railing with assistance of the officers.
The man was unharmed and transported to HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley Hospital for mental health evaluation.
“Tis incident ultimately had a positive and successful outcome due to the heroic efforts of all officers, troopers, deputies and civilians who seamlessly assisted in the rescue efforts,” said Ulster Police Chief Kyle Berardi.
Agencies assisting in the rescue included police from Town of Ulster, State Police, Kingston Police and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.
