NEWBURGH- A dog that seriously injured a 17-year-old girl in Newburgh earlier this year has been euthanized following a City Court ruling.

City of Newburgh police responded to 165 Fullerton Avenue on May 18 after receiving a report of a dog bite.  Investigators said the teenager was walking her family’s dog when she was attacked by a loose dog named Luna, suffering a puncture wound and laceration to her right thigh.

Police determined Luna and another dog, Onyx, were running loose in violation of city code and that neither dog was licensed.  While Onyx was not involved in the May 18 attack, police records showed previous incidents involving both dogs, including a 2025 case in which Onyx allegedly bit a 36-year-old woman.

The dogs’ owner, Lisa Dederick, 45, of Newburgh, was charged with keeping an unlicensed dog.  The city also filed a dangerous dog petition against Luna under state law.

During court proceedings, Dederick stipulated that Luna met the legal definition of a dangerous dog.  City Court terminated her ownership rights and authorized a local veterinary hospital to determine the dog’s disposition.

Because of Luna’s documented bite history and behavioral concerns, the dog was deemed ineligible for adoption and was humanely euthanized.
