SOUTHEAST – A Dutchess County man faces felony weapons possession charges following his arrest by the Putnam Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Brian Hess reported the arrest Thursday of Edwin Bowers III, 27, of Wassaic following a traffic stop on Route 22 in Southeast.
The sheriff said Deputy Victoria Crimmins was on patrol at 2:45 a.m. when she observed a vehicle traveling 54 mph in a posted 35 mph zone.
After conducting a traffic stop and checking Bowers’ license through the New York State DMV database, the deputy learned his driving privileges had been suspended six times.
Hess said as the investigation continued, deputies recovered a loaded Taurus G3 9mm handgun from a backpack inside the vehicle. The handgun had a round in the chamber and a large-capacity ammunition feeding device containing 16 additional rounds. Bowers did not possess a pistol permit, added the sheriff.
Deputies also recovered a quantity of marijuana from the vehicle along with two toddlers, aged 2 and 3, who were also inside.
Bowers was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated unlicensed operation as well as given multiple traffic tickets.
He was arraigned in Southeast and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
The children were released to a family member, and Child Protective Services was notified.
