WHITE PLAINS – Former New York State Police Drug Investigator Michael O’Flaherty, 43, of Poughkeepsie, who pled guilty in federal court in February, admitted that he told a former confidential informant, considered a major fentanyl distributor, of an investigation into his dealings and then lied to fellow law enforcement agents when asked about it.
O’Flaherty, a member of the State Police since 2013, was sentenced in federal court this week to “time served,” although he never served any time in jail.
United States District Judge Halpern had received several character reference letters in support of O’Flaherty from friends, family, and members of the business community, asking for leniency.
The conviction could have sent O’Flaherty to prison for a term of five years. At least two retired members of the state police, including a former supervisor of O’Flaherty’s, submitted letters to the judge praising the defendant for his work as a trooper.
