POUGHKEEPSIE – US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) was in Poughkeepsie on Monday, calling for an end to the war in Iran to curb rising grocery costs and inflation.  Gillibrand also wants to eliminate the tariffs imposed by the White House that she claims are hurting the supply chain and driving up costs for goods.

Joined by State Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) and Julie Shiroshi, representing County Legislator Randy Johnson, Gillibrand said America is experiencing a “cost of living crisis” that could have been avoided.  The crisis, she said, “Is a direct result of the war in Iran.  By starting this war, President Trump threatens global energy supplies and gambles with the financial security of every single American.”

With inflation rising to more than four percent, grocery stores are forced to raise prices just to stay in business, Gillibrand said.

Asked how to curb the rising costs, Gillibrand offered three steps to that she says need to happen.

“End the war in Iran.  Stop the chaotic tariffs which affect the supply chain and the interests of farmers, and the third, most immediate one is to restore SNAP benefits – a lot of low-income families who need food are being denied a benefit that we’ve had in place for a long time to help these working families make ends meet.”

Gillibrand and others then toured the Tropical Fresh Market on Main Street in Poughkeepsie.
