MAHOPAC – A 19-year-old from Mahopac was injured when his car drove off Union Valley Road at Teakettle Spout Road in Mahopac Monday, overturned, and plummeted into Teakettle Spout Lake landing upside down.
Passersby called 9-1-1 and members of the Carmel Police Department, Mahopac Fire Department, Mahopac Falls Fire Department Dive Team, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a Putnam Empress Paramedic, and Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services personnel all rushed to the scene.
The unidentified 19-year-old escaped the overturned vehicle before emergency crews arrived. He was evaluated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Putnam Hospital Center for treatment of injuries authorities described as not life-threatening.
Camel Police Lt. Michael Bodo commended two officers who when reaching the scene dove into the muddy waters to search for additional victims.
Firefighters also donned special equipment and applied absorbing booms around the vehicle to contain fluids that began to leak from the damaged car.
