CARMEL – The Carmel Town Board hopes to secure millions of dollars in state grants for infrastructure projects in the greater Carmel-Mahopac area in addition to park improvements and waterfront planning along Lake Mahopac.

To qualify for the funding, the board approved a resolution committing the local matching funds required to compete for four major grant programs through New York State’s Consolidated Funding Application process.

Supervisor Michael Cazzari said the largest effort involves the state’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, which could provide between $50,000 and $2 million, with the town responsible for a 25 percent local match.

“Rather than focusing on a single location, the study will examine the town’s lakefront holdings as a whole, including municipal property along Lake Mahopac, and Swan Cove,” he said.

The town is also pursuing Water Quality Improvement Project funding to restore the Tea Kettle Spout Lake Dam and the Lake Casse Dam, both in Mahopac. The grants require a 25 percent local contribution and can range from $100,000 to as much as $15 million.

Another application targets New York’s recently created KICKS program, inspired by the FIFA World Cup, to improve soccer facilities statewide. Carmel hopes to secure funding to construct Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant walkways connecting the parking area to the soccer fields at Airport Park in Mahopac.

The town’s fourth application seeks New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Grant Program funding for improvements at Jimmy McDonough Park in Mahopac.

The state is expected to review Consolidated Funding Application submissions this fall, with funding announcements anticipated around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
