BREWSTER- Nine-one-one calls Saturday afternoon reporting smoke inside the Optum Urgent Care Center sent members of the Brewster and Carmel Fire Departments to the sprawling Highlands Shopping Plaza off I-84 and Route 312 in Southeast.
The clinic was evacuated and firefighters traced the smoke to heating and air conditioning equipment found on the roof of the building.
Responders faced a challenge because the row of stores—including a mattress company, liquor store, drugstore and pizzeria—sits above other businesses beneath the parking lot. Fire officials said weight restrictions imposed during construction prevent heavy emergency apparatus from accessing the area.
Firefighters had to park their vehicles on a nearby road and carry equipment across the parking lot to reach the scene.
No injuries were reported, and business returned to normal after the smoke cleared.
