GOSHEN- A Poughkeepsie man has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison after pleading guilty to multiple felony drug charges stemming from three separate incidents in the City of Newburgh.

Orange County District Attorney Dave Hoovler announced that Demetrius Ware, 42, was sentenced Monday in Orange County Court to an aggregate prison term of 10 years, followed by two years of post-release supervision.  Ware previously pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

According to prosecutors, Ware was first arrested on September 13, 2024, after City of Newburgh police responded to a report of two men fighting, one of whom was believed to have a gun.  Officers discovered Ware had an active arrest warrant and, during a search, recovered cocaine, empty glassine envelopes commonly used for packaging narcotics and cash.

Investigators later linked Ware to a nearby vehicle, where police found additional cocaine, fentanyl and a digital scale, prosecutors said.

While released pending those charges, Ware was arrested again on January 23, 2025, after members of the Orange County Drug Task Force and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence in the City of Newburgh associated with him.  Authorities said they recovered more than one-eighth of an ounce of cocaine, cash and a digital scale.

Ware pleaded guilty in October 2025, admitting he possessed narcotics with the intent to sell during both the September 2024 and January 2025 incidents.

Before he was sentenced on those cases, Ware was arrested a third time on February 17, 2026, after City of Newburgh police detectives said they observed him conduct a hand-to-hand drug transaction. Officers recovered fentanyl, cocaine and cash during his arrest.

Ware pleaded guilty in April to possessing narcotics with the intent to sell in connection with that incident.

Hoovler credited the Orange County Drug Task Force, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Newburgh Police Department with investigating the cases that led to Ware’s convictions.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Alexis Gregory prosecuted the cases.
