POUGHKEEPSIE – The City of Poughkeepsie is beginning a water line inspection program on Monday, July 20, to meet US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements and confirm they are not made of lead. In 2021, the EPA Lead and Copper Regulation was implemented, requiring drinking water systems nationwide to control erosion and identify and replace all service lines containing lead. The regulation includes a 10-year deadline to fully replace almost all lead pipes and to reduce the lead level in water from 15 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb.
The City of Poughkeepsie has contracted with H2M, which will be excavating targeted areas around curbs to inspect the water lines and determine whether they are lead-based, and then backfill and reseed the disturbed areas.
The inspections are projected to run for 6-8 weeks and will not interrupt water service.
The contractor will need access to certain basements to inspect and document the water service line materials at the water meters inside the houses. This inspection can be scheduled separately if needed, and performing a self-survey may prevent the need for workers to enter the home.
H2M is mailing notifications to all residents, knocking on doors, and leaving doorhangers at homes and properties where they are planning to work.
