Dr. DaMia Harris-Madden speaking in Kingston on Wednesday

KINGSTON – Ulster and Dutchess counties are set to receive millions of dollars for childcare subsidies and pre-K programs in Gov. Kathy Hochul’s budget.

And Dr. DaMia Harris-Madden, commissioner of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, visited the area Wednesday and spoke to community leaders at the Children’s Home of Kingston of how governor’s priorities will impact the region.

Hochul’s budget has earmarked $3 billion in childcare subsidies statewide with nearly $24 million coming to the Mid-Hudson region and nearly $690,000 coming to Ulster County.

Dutchess County is part of a $60 million pilot universal pre-K program, for child 0-3, with Monroe and Broome counties.

“There’s smart planning that goes in,” said Harris-Madden, “this is a heavy budget. But it’s a heavy investment to things that make life more affordable for your own. “
