POUGHKEEPSIE – The City of Poughkeepsie has been plagued by vandalism in the past several months, and estimated repair costs are in the thousands of dollars. The Financial Parking Deck, across the street from the MJN Convention Center, has two stairwells: one on the east side and one on the west side, near Garden Street. Over the past few months, primarily on Friday and Saturday nights, vandals have broken stairwell windows, dropping shattered glass onto the ground below.
.
The vandals typically break three or four windows at a time, requiring DPW workers to arrive on Monday to remove the remaining broken glass from the window sills and clean up the broken glass from the sidewalks and stairwells.
More windows were broken out of both stairwells between Friday and Saturday nights, repeating the cycle.
Sources have told Mid-Hudson News that local glass companies have previously provided rough estimates of nearly $10,000 to replace the broken windows.
The City of Poughkeepsie police have been investigating the crimes. Anyone who may have witnessed the vandals breaking the windows are asked to call the city’s confidential tip line at 845-451-7577.
