WASHINGTON – Congressman Mike Lawler (R, NY-17) has introduced a House resolution congratulating the New York Knicks on winning the 2026 NBA championship, marking the franchise’s first NBA title since 1973.
The resolution recognizes the Knicks’ five-game NBA Finals victory over the San Antonio Spurs and celebrates the team’s 16-3 postseason record, which included multiple comeback victories.
The measure also honors Finals Most Valuable Player and team captain Jalen Brunson, along with coach Mike Brown, owner James Dolan and the entire Knicks organization.
“For generations of New Yorkers, we’ve waited for this moment,” Lawler said. “Our team never quit, never backed down, and reminded all of us of what it means to be a New Yorker and what makes our state special: grit, resilience, and the belief that anything is possible.”
Lawler said the championship ended a title drought of more than 50 years and praised the players, coaches and fans who supported the team through decades without a championship.
The resolution also commends the Knicks for bringing together New Yorkers from diverse backgrounds, energizing basketball fans worldwide and inspiring people through the team’s championship run.
The bipartisan resolution is co-sponsored by New York representatives Claudia Tenney, Jerry Nadler, Nick LaLota, Daniel Goldman, Ritchie Torres, Gregory Meeks, Andrew Garbarino, Thomas Suozzi, Nicole Malliotakis, Josh Riley, Nick Langworthy, Pat Ryan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
