MAHOPAC – A creak and a loud boom alerted a Mahopac family that their home’s structure had been compromised.

Calls to the Putnam 9-1-1 Center Monday around 12:30 p.m. sent members of the Carmel Police, Mahopac and Carmel Fire Departments, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and a Putnam Empress Paramedic into action.

Responders arrived at the multi-family residence along See Avenue and discovered that a basement cement block wall on the front side of the building had collapsed into the basement. Once the wall caved in, the front entry porch sagged downward necessitating firefighters to place planks of timber to bridge the gap from the front doorway to solid ground allowing residents on the second floor to safely exit.

Mahopac Fire Chief Kyle Trillas contacted the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services requesting that the county’s Technical Rescue Team and the Westchester County Collapse Team respond to assist.

Carmel Building Inspector Mike Carnazza deemed the structure unsafe and condemned the property.

The American Red Cross was called to help arrange shelter for the three families displaced from the building’s apartments.

No injuries were reported.
