MID-HUDSON – The group Hudson Valley Patriots for Immigration Reform, believers that ‘no human being is illegal,” has commended the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision affirming a constitutional principle that every child born in the United States is a citizen of the United States.
The high court Tuesday validated birthright citizenship by rejecting President Trump’s executive order declaring that children born to people who are in the United States illegally or temporarily are not American citizens.
A spokesperson for Hudson Valley Patriots for Immigration Reform said, “President Trump may believe he is above the law, but he cannot override the Constitution with a stroke of a pen. More people, including justices on the Supreme Court, have rejected Mr. Trump’s dangerous vision.”
The spokesperson added, “All of us belong here. We will continue to safeguard birthright citizenship into the future.”
Chief Justice John Roberts said the 14th Amendment which was adopted following the Civil War ruled that anyone born in the United States is a citizen. “Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights—to freely participate in our political community. The Framers of the 14th Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land,” said Roberts adding, “We keep that promise today.”
Three conservative justices would have allowed the restrictions to take effect.
Meanwhile, State Attorney General Letitia James also lauded the high court’s ruling calling birthright citizenship a “constitutional guarantee that has defined this nation for generations. Immigrants built our country, and we draw our strength from those who come here seeking a better life. The ruling preserves that promise for generations to come. Every person born in the United States is an American. That was true yesterday, it is true today, and we will never stop fighting to make sure it remains true tomorrow.”
