FERNDALE – Dozens gathered on Sunday to kick off the summer season and dedicate the Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project’s 16th marker in Ferndale. The ceremony was held in a park at 9 Ferndale Road, across from the local Mobil station. Attendees spent the afternoon in the historic hamlet,
Project director Marissa Scheinfeld spoke about the area’s history. “Ferndale flourished because of the vision and the hard work of countless families who had boarding houses, hotels, bungalow colonies, and businesses that welcomed generations of visitors.”
Co-founder of the project, Louis Inghilterra, unveiled the new marker. “This place is so rich with just old hotel history, you would just not really know it, he said. “You have to really look to find it. So I appreciate seeing so many people who remember, even if the landscape has changed. We’re here (with the marker) for this reason.”
Fifteen other markers have been installed in areas of Sullivan County that trace the historic influence of the bygone Borscht Belt era.
