WAPPINGERS FALLS – A 17-year-old boy was shot by law enforcement around 1:45 a.m. Saturday on the Wappingers Creek Bridge in the Village of Wappingers Falls.  Initial accounts indicate that police responded to the area around 1 a.m. for a report of a suicidal person who was threatening to jump from the bridge.

A source said the teen turned from the bridge railing, armed with a knife, and began approaching the officers.  The teen failed to comply with commands to drop the knife, and at least one officer discharged his firearm, striking the youth.

The teen was triaged at the scene and transported to a local hospital for additional treatment, where he was pronounced dead.

Law enforcement officials from the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and New York State Attorney General’s Office were at the scene of the shooting as of 8 a.m.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office has deferred all inquiries to the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations has launched a preliminary investigation into the incident.

Route 9D/West Main and East Main Streets were closed to vehicular traffic most of the morning on Saturday.
