CARMEL- Twice annually for the past 28 years, Putnam County’s emergency services providers sponsor blood drives during times of the year when blood shortages are at their highest.

The Christmas Blood Drive and the Independence Day blood drive are well attended, with dozens of pints donated to support the New York Blood Bank.  Over the past quarter century, Putnam residents have donated more than 4,200 pints of blood and sponsored three bone marrow registry drives, resulting in one known match.

Blood drive coordinator Denis Hanrahan thanked the community for “your generous gift and helping fill a life sustaining need.  We’re asking once again to step up and join us at our summer blood drive on Sunday.”

The New York Blood Center has declared a Blood Supply Emergency since with the holidays here inventory is at critical one-to-two-day supply.

Hanrahan noted:  “Sunday, a day of reflection, a day of rest and now a day to reflect by extending your arm while resting on a gurney.”

Members of the Knights of Columbus, the Fraternal Order of Police and the FDNY will be hosting the critical summer blood drive from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. at the Carmel VFW Post at 32 Gleneida Avenue in Carmel.
