BEACON – The man who had been cliff diving into the Fishkill Creek in the City of Beacon Thursday evening and died has been identified as 34-year-old Vincent Javinett of Newburgh. The incident occurred just southeast of 508 Fishkill Avenue near Groveville Mill Dam.
Beacon Police Chief Thomas Figlia said Friday that after Javinett had not resurfaced for several minutes, witnesses called 911.
The chief said given the amount of time he had been under water, there was no chance of survival.
Beacon firefighters entered the water in an attempt to make a recovery, but were unable to locate him. State Police divers then responded and recovered the body.
Figlia said Beacon Police recovered video evidence from the scene that confirmed, beyond a doubt, that the incident was a tragic accident.
“As this tragedy confirms, cliff diving int the Fishkill Creek is extremely dangerous and it should never be attempted,” the chief said.
