CARMEL- To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, officials from the Town of Carmel joined staff of the Reed Memorial Library and Mahopac Library Saturday during a remembrance ceremony at the Old Baptist Revolutionary War Cemetery, honoring residents of the county seat who answered the call for American independence.

Supervisor Mike Cazzari praised the early American heroes: “Our town has always stood proudly in support of veterans and all those who have answered the call to defend freedom. The brave men of Col. Henry Ludington’s militia left behind their farms, businesses, and families whenever duty called. They responded to alarms in defense of their neighbors and their young nation, helping resist British efforts to control the Hudson River and supporting the protection of the vital colonial fortifications at West Point.”

Library officials also announced in conjunction with the Putnam County Historian’s Office, the lending institutions will continue pursuing grant opportunities throughout the year to support the ongoing restoration and preservation of the historic cemetery, ensuring the stories and sacrifices of these patriots are remembered for generations to come.

More than a dozen early patriots are buried in the Old Baptist Cemetery on Gleneida Avenue in Carmel.
