MAHOPAC- A 56-year-old Mahopac man arrested in April 2024 on charges for allegedly secretly filming girls in 2018 and 2019 as they used a public restroom, will be spending time in a federal penitentiary after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing and distributing child pornography.

John Towers did not appear at a hearing last month, prosecutors said and an hour later after an alert indicated his tracker had been cut off, State Police stopped Towers’ vehicle in Dover Plains and took him into custody.

A criminal complaint filed in federal court accused Towers of making more than 800 hidden-camera videos that also captured women inside stalls as they used the toilet.

The complaint described the scene of the alleged crimes only as a “privately owned, public park in Putnam County” and said that Towers had worked there for 20 years.

A Facebook profile named Towers as a Mahopac High School graduate who had worked at Stonecrop since August 2004.  Archived Stonecrop materials listed him as a part-time horticulture assistant.

Stonecrop is an agricultural center found in the Hudson Highlands in Cold Spring.

The investigation began after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent tips to Putnam officials indicating that Towers’ cellphone had uploaded dozens of images depicting children engaged in sexual activity.  Towers is scheduled for sentencing next February and could face 10 years to life in prison.
