GARRISON- It has been 27 years, but new water meters will soon be calibrating the amount of water used by residents and businesses in the hamlet of Garrison Landing.
The Philipstown Town Board approved a resolution authorizing the municipality to solicit bids for the purchase and installation of thirty meters.
Supervisor John Van Tassel said the old meters failed when the township converted its system from “ground-service to well-fed.”
Funds were unavailable to purchase the new hardware until last year when the board authorized borrowing $500,000 to cover capital upgrades.
Garrison Landing Water District users will be repaying the loan. The town has already added a $2,500 levy to the tax bills of the water district’s users.
Van Tassel said that after the meters are installed, the town will set a per-gallon usage fee.
New York State audited the water district last year which indicated that Philipstown spent $2.4 million between 2018 and 2023 to truck in water for Garrison Landing, reducing its general-fund balance from $1 million to $53,000.
