TOWN OF NEWBURGH – It took just one day for police to arrest the man they believe stole a $10,000 gold necklace from the Kay Jewelry store in the Town of Newburgh on Wednesday.

The suspect, later identified as Kwasi Oronde, 25, of the Town of Poughkeepsie, entered the store on Tuesday, June 16 and asked an employee to check out the gold chain.

The item was removed from the display case and placed on the top. It was then that Oronde allegedly grabbed it and fled from the store just before 7 p.m.

The Newburgh Police Detective Division investigated, arrested him at his home and recovered the stolen jewelry.

He was brought back to Orange County and released on an appearance ticket returnable to town justice court next month.

Newburgh Town Police were assisted by Newburgh City Police, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, State Police, and Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center.
