KINGSTON – Ulster County is the first in New York to launch a community-based air quality network, partnering with Bard College to install 17 street-level sensors at local libraries and town halls. Residents can access real-time pollution data and receive free automated alerts via the Just Air platform whenever conditions change. This expansion brings the total to 22 regional centers, significantly increasing access to vital hyperlocal air quality information.
Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger talked about the program.
“They’ll get stats if air quality is poor, and then they’ll get a text instantly when the moment air quality has improved.”
Parts of the population that are most affected are the very young and older people. This system will alert them to mask up and or close windows, especially if conditions are unhealthy.
“The smoke from wildfires is very bad for your health, and we’ve had a couple of doozies in the last few years, and those predicted impacts of climate change are expected to increase.”
