BEACON – Former City of Beacon Police Chief John Johnson Sr., 76, passed away on June 5, 2026, after a battle with esophageal cancer. Johnson retired as Beacon Police Chief on April 2, 1994. The wake for the chief is today (Wednesday) from 3 to 7 pm at Riverview Funeral Home by Halvey, 2 Beekman Street in Beacon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 11, at 11 am at St. John the Evangelist Church at 35 Willow Street in Beacon. The burial will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery in Beacon.
Johnson graduated from Beacon High School in 1967 and continued his education at Dutchess Community College before joining the Beacon Police Department at age 20 on October 13, 1969. He rose through the ranks of the department until he was named chief.
