ALBANY – The State Police has promoted Capt. Kyle J. Kroeger to the rank of major and appointed him as the 28th commander of Troop T, which patrols the New York State Thruway.

Kroeger most recently served as captain and zone commander of Troop F, Zone 1, where he supervised State Police operations in Sullivan County in New York’s Hudson Valley.

In his new role, Kroeger will oversee uniformed members and civilian employees across 12 stations in 21 counties, stretching from New York City to Buffalo. Troop T is responsible for policing the 570-mile Thruway corridor, which serves millions of motorists each year.

“Major Kroeger brings more than two decades of state and local law enforcement experience and military service to his new role,” the agency said in a statement.

Kroeger’s previous assignment included a prior leadership role within Troop T. He has served in a range of positions across the State Police, beginning his career in 2002 as a trooper assigned to Troop F at SP Wurtsboro.

He was promoted to sergeant in 2007 while assigned to Troop K at SP Cortlandt before returning to Troop F as a line sergeant in Middletown and Wurtsboro. In 2014, he became station commander at SP Wurtsboro, a role he held for two years before being promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Office of Emergency Management.

He later returned to Troop F as assistant zone commander for Zone 1 and was appointed captain in 2021, serving as Troop T administrative captain. In 2023, he again returned to Troop F, serving as zone 1 commander at SP Liberty.

Before joining the State Police, Kroeger served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and as a deputy sheriff with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office. Kroeger succeeds Maj. Brian T. Ferrone, who has taken command of Troop K.
