PUTNAM VALLEY- What began as a 9-1-1 call reporting a trespasser on private property in Putnam Valley swimming in the homeowner’s pool, turned into a violent struggle during which a member of the Putnam Sheriff’s Department suffered injury.
Sheriff Brian Hess Tuesday reported the arrest of Anthony Morelli, 43 of Stamford, Conn. in connection with the incident.
Hess said when the deputy was responding to the original trespassing report, he received information that the suspect had fled the area in a red pickup truck traveling toward Peekskill Hollow Road.
Hess said the deputy who was not named located the vehicle and during the traffic stop, Mr. Morelli repeatedly ignored the deputy’s lawful commands and resisted being taken into custody, leading to a physical struggle.
“Despite the suspect’s active resistance and a physical struggle that lasted several minutes, the deputy was able to maintain control until deputies, State Police, Kent and Carmel Police arrived on scene to assist in taking him into custody,” said Hess.
Morelli and the deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident and were
transported to Putnam Hospital Center for evaluation and treatment.
Morelli was arrested for felony assault in addition to Criminal Trespass, Resisting Arrest and Obstruction of Governmental Administration.
He was arraigned in Putnam Valley Town Court and was remanded to the Putnam Correctional Facility on a $3,000 bond.
