COLD SPRING- Former Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney endorsed Cait Conley on Friday in her bid to represent New York’s 17th Congressional District beginning January 1, 2027.
Conley is one of five Democrats seeking the nomination to oppose Republican Mike Lawler in November. A Democratic primary on June 23 will decide the candidate.
Maloney, a Cold Spring resident, said: “We need a candidate who can beat Mike Lawler and deliver results right out of the gate. NY-17 will be one of the most important battlegrounds in the country, and Cait is the best candidate to take this seat back for Democrats. Cait has spent her life serving this country, solving difficult problems, and bringing people together to get things done. She has the experience, the discipline, and the credibility to win this district and be a truly effective voice for Hudson Valley families in Congress and deliver results on day one.”
Conley said she was “deeply honored to have earned the support of Congressman Maloney. For a decade, Sean fought tirelessly for the Hudson Valley, as a leader in the Democratic Party and as the first openly gay person elected to Congress from New York. Sean has been a champion for veterans, families, and seniors, fighting to protect our environment, and bring critical infrastructure dollars home to our region. Now, we’re building the coalition we need to win this race, flip this seat, and fight for lower costs, stronger communities, and a Congress that puts people ahead of politics.”
Maloney represented Putnam, Westchester, Dutchess, and Orange counties from 2013 to 2023 and served as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Maloney lost reelection in an upset defeat to Republican Mike Lawler in November 2022.
